Weather and seasons in Uzbek

Bahor, yoz, kuz, qish and weather words in Uzbek: issiq, sovuq, yomgʻir, qor, Havo qanday?, with pronunciation and the verb yogʻmoq for rain and snow.

Each phrase on its own page, with the reply: sun and moon

This page gives you the four seasons, the weather words you hear every day, and the sentences for small talk about the weather. The grammar idea is small: the verb yogʻmoq is used for both rain and snow, and the suffix -da turns a season into “in spring”, “in winter”.

You will also want the words for time: days of the week and months and telling the time. To say how you feel, see how to say “I am tired” in Uzbek.

besh daraja sovuq BESH da-ra-JA so-VUQ five degrees below zero

Patterns: yogʻmoq, -da, -li and daraja

  • yogʻmoq is the one verb for falling rain and snow. Yomgʻir yogʻadi (rain falls, it will rain), yomgʻir yogʻyapti (it is raining now), yomgʻir yogʻdi (it rained). Replace yomgʻir with qor and you have snow. Negative: Yomgʻir yogʻmayapti (it is not raining).
  • -da means “in”: bahorda (in spring), yozda (in summer), kuzda (in autumn), qishda (in winter). Yozda issiq boʻladi means “in summer it is hot”.
  • -li means “with” and makes the weather an adjective: quyosh → quyoshli, bulut → bulutli, yomgʻir → yomgʻirli. Ertaga havo quyoshli boʻladi means “tomorrow the weather will be sunny”.
  • daraja (degree): after the number say issiq for plus and sovuq for minus. Yigirma daraja issiq is +20 and besh daraja sovuq is -5; many people also say the loans plyus and minus. The word for temperature is harorat. A number before daraja takes no -ta: yigirma daraja.
